Why we gather
One Candle is a space to remember Ukrainian and Russian soldiers who have died in war. We remember the people behind the uniforms and the families waiting for them to come home.
Remembrance does not endorse war
Lighting a candle for a person does not endorse a government, a war or an invasion, nor does it excuse harm done to others. Each light holds grief for a life lost and a wish that war will take no more lives.
Equal respect does not mean equal responsibility
We offer equal respect to the Ukrainian and Russian dead. This does not equate governments, their actions or their responsibility for the war. Compassion for a life can coexist with a clear understanding of aggression and responsibility.
A little light across languages
The site is available in Chinese, English, Ukrainian and Russian, with no account required. Choose whom to remember, light a candle online and take a quiet moment. Each browser may light up to three candles per UTC day, shared between both dedications.
What the map remembers
The map groups candles by the visitor location chosen when each candle is submitted. This is not a register of the dead. Counts do not represent deaths, distinct participants or local public opinion, and colors do not express a country’s political position. These lights hold remembrance and a shared hope that the war will end.
